Once on this Island is somewhat of a Carribean “Romeo and Juliet” with mythological incorporation. It tells a story of a young peasant girl named Ti Moune (PHS Junior Afua Yeboah) and her journey. She is spared from a flood by the gods and lives her life anticipating a special purpose. We later find out why. She saves the life of a wealthy man, Daniel (PHS Senior Lucas Sanchez), and they fall in love although it is not accep
table for a peasant and a wealthy person to be together. The Gods heavily influence her journey. Agwe, God of Water (Junior Joshua Gailliard), creates the storm that drowned Ti Moune and the storm that Daniel crashes his car in. Asaka, mother of the earth (Junior Somoya Jimerson), provides various necessities for Ti Moune during her journey. Papa Ge (Junior Sheridan Alexander), is the god of death. In conflicting roles with Erzulie (god of love played by Junior Destiny Mosely) he tries to take the life of Daniel. Erzulie tries to fight it with the power of love.
The greatest aspect of this musical is the creativity. The cast has put their own spin on the Broadway musical, making it unique to the talents of Peekskill. One thing that many will find as a surprise is the live music on stage. Musicians Michael Snell (Rain God) and Manny Henry (Armand), play live instruments on stage as the play goes along. It is one of the many surprises that the Peekskill High School Drama Club has in store.
