The Apollo Theater: A Reflection

Last Wednesday, a few lucky students got the opportunity to go to an Amateur night in the world famous Apollo Theater. The trip was sponsored by the Elton Brand Academy. Last Wednesday after school, we took a van down to Harlem with Mr. Andujar and Ms. Daniels. When we stepped in the theatre, the first thing that caught our eyes were the pictures of famous African-American that have performed in the theater before, including Michael Jackson. The show began and the atmosphere became very bubbly. Everybody dancing, clapping and holding hands regardless of color of their skin. In the break we got to dance on the stage and read about the history of the theatre. We watched ‘Top Dog’ which is only three times a year. The rule of the night was “If you like the performer, cheer. You know how to cheer, don’t you?” And the audience let out a roar that rattled windows all over Harlem.” Everybody ended up doing great except for one guy who was boo-ed off the stage. He did a dance that anybody could have done. Although, it was quite funny, we were looking for talent. The others did great. Oh, and Ms. Daniels received a gift because she tweeted the most in the audience during the show. Congratulations, Ms. Daniels! We went to Red Lobster located right next to the theatre. I never been to Harlem before but I am glad I was selected for the trip. It was an awesome experience. I truly believe it is a diverse environment with people from all over the world. It really opened up everybody’s eyes. Trips are a great way to reward students who deserve it. Thank you for all the past trips that the Elton Brand Academy sponsored. This year has been awesome and I will remember my senior year the most because of all the experiences and benefits I gained from these trips. Thank you.

On Wednesday May 22, 2014; Ms. Daniels and Mr.Andujar took his hard working students to the Apollo Theater in Harlem. The students first went to Red Lobster for lunch and shortly after went to the famous Apollo. Students made new friends and connected with each other and had a blast! Amateur Night at the Apollo is a big loud party where brave contestants might be cheered, jeered or booed. Every Wednesday at 7:30PM the audience decide who will be the next Apollo legend by telling the performers to be good or be gone! We thank you Elton Brand for giving students a chance to experience such a wonderful trip. In addition students were able to dance on the stage that many famous performers such as Michael Jackson danced on. Also thank you Ms. Daniels and Mr. Andujar for making this trip happen.
