All Because of a Shot

A ribbon outside Peekskill High School memorializes a victim of the Parkland shooting.

What just happened?

Questions came to my head,

And I felt unsafe.

Anywhere I went,

They could be coming for me

to end all my dreams in just one shot.

I imagined the scenes–

Screams, tears, despair.

A Mom holding her daughter’s body

Remembering plans for tomorrow…

I tried not to think about it,

But my face revealed my thoughts.

Are they going to do the same to us, Mom?

Put your faith in God, she said.

I could see what was happening,

But couldn’t see why.

I can’t understand the darkness

Of those who created the bloody events.

We want justice, but

I don’t want them caught–

Locked in jail, sinking in their cruelty.

I want them to repent for the lives they took.

Together we can fight for the safety of those who remain alive,

Give comfort to those who loved them.

Anything to stop…

The crying.
